SIXTH Annual FlyLaSalina.com “Fiesta Del Cielo– Cinco de Mayo– Full Moon Fly-in” May 3-8, 2012

Deemed “The Perfect Ridge” by hang glider  pilots in the late 70’s, La Salina is known worldwide as Baja’s best Airsport venue. Launch from the 700’ ridge, located ½ mile eastof Pacific Ocean.  Soar for hours, climbing to 3000 ft+ in desert thermals, then land on big/beautiful sandy beach, OR XC into Baja’s world class wine country.

The Fly-in is  open to Paragliders, Hang Gliders, PPG, Ultralight Pilots, Base-Jumpers and Enthusiasts: EVERYONE IS INVITED!!!

For non-pilots and observers, tandem flights will be available from some of Southern CA and Mexico’s most experienced trained professionals in paragliding, PPG and ultralight aircraft. If you’ve ever dreamed of  soaring like a hawk, raven, eagle, REACH FOR THE SKY…YOUR TIME HAS COME!!!!

The Fiesta begins Thursday, morning  May 3 and extends until Tuesday May 8, 2012.  This provides up to 6 days and 5 nights at the venue.  The main days of the event will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

THE EVENT

This year, we are considering  flying up to 5 different coastal sites: Cantamar/Halfway House; La Fonda; La Salina; Salsipuedes; El Borrego; and “The Antennaes” at  Punta Banda/Bufadora.  The final decision will be made each morning depending on forecasts, weather, and willingness of the participants.  Here is a little background:

Cantamar-Halfway House, dates back to before La Salina, and was a popular HG site in the 70’s and 80’s. Last year the Ensenda Open competition pilots and fly-in participants competed by flying from this site back to La Salina and beyond.  This year, conditions permitting, we will attempt to include this opporunity again.  In fact, we may make this the primary XC run, beginning here and attempting to fly to La Salina, Salsipuedes, and onto Ensenada for @ 50KM.  It can be done. The launch is located on private property by individuals known to BajaBrent

Salsipuedes , is our dream flying site: its beauty, ease of access and bouyant air are just so darn fun, you never wanna land!

Front Page Article: BajaBrent soaring Salsipuedes November 1997

You literally drive right up to the launch and run off the bluff @ 200 feet above the ocean.

BajaBrent soaring Salsipuedes Flyin 2011

This year we hope to have an LZ or meeting point at a beach club at San Miguel, which is just past the toll gate! This site is a bit unreliable given it is on the leeside of the prevailing NW wind, But when it works its the berries AND its quicker than getting to launch at LS (15 mins). The launch is located on private property by individuals known to BajaBrent

This year’s new entry is El Borrego, a new site pioneered by the new local Mexican pilot brotherhood! This site was identified last year while traveling by car into wine country during the Comp. festivities.  It appears to have tremendous potential as gateway launch to  XC into Valle de Guadalupe and beyond…It appears to be an excellent option to La Salina, in the event we get socked in one day with a marine layer. This launch is located on private property and requires permission to fly.  ( 30 minute)

Finally there is “The Antennaes Launch” at Punta Banda/Bufadora (1 hour south). This site has been around for many years, but several years ago, it was locked up for security.  Well the Mexican brotherhood stepped up to the plate and got a set of keys!!!!  HAHAHA  It  is @ 1000 meters high and promises an excellent glide, even if the thermals aren’t working.  However, it too can be a little unreliable, as it is almost on the exact opposite side of Ensenada bay from Salsipuedes….

We have ONE MORE INCREDIBLE SITE, we are discussing.  But there are many issues including access,  3+ hrs travel, camping (option) AND therefore would be preserved until the last day of the event, and perhaps require an additional day.  It would begin at one of the highest launches in all of Baja, perhaps in all of Mexico.  Maybe we can fly to Cabo!!!!  More later….

AGENDA

The Fly-in will begin  Thursday morning as site intro day, for some, and most likely a fun flying day at La Salina.  Come in Wednesday night and be ready to fly Thursday morning.  XC and flying events begin Friday.

Thursday night (May 3rd) we hope to feature internationally acclaimed fiddle/flaminko guitar duet of Depue-Dehoyos. This is an amazing spanglish duet that will BLOW YOUR SOCKS OFF! If you wanna know more, google “Alex Depue” or find him on Facebook.

Friday is one day we can certainly consider undertaking the XC flight or elect to try any other flying site based upon conditions. OR we can stay at La Salina.

The full moon  is technically on Saturday evening.  Thus we want to fly it  either Friday or Saturday night.  The night BEFORE the scientifically defined full moon, is actually better for photo ops.  The moon looks just as full and rises an hour before the sun sets.  IF that doesnt work, then Saturday evening IT IS!!!!

Saturday is CINCO DE MAYO!  More of a Gringo celebration than Mexican EXCEPT here in Baja, everyone joins in.  This day will also likely be a La Salina day, as we do NOT want to drive towards Rosarito or anywhere near Ensenada.  IT WOULD be possible to fly Salsipuedes as we can return to La Salina without having to drive into Ensenada…more later.

Saturday is ALSO the 30th semi-annual Rosarito-Ensenada bike race.  As mentioned before we will want to avoid the roads between 10-2 and Ensenada under all circumstances! BUT there is nothing that says, if you are a bike enthusiast, bring your bike jump on in the race, and have fun!  You’ll only miss one day of flying, and if thats a good day, endure the razzing from the rest of us!  But hey it could be a lot of fun.  Maybe a family member or friend might wanna come with you and take that day to ride in the race?  Trust me its not a serious race….more of a spectacle of good natured partiers on bikess….UNTIL they hit EL TIGRE (the backside road leading up to launch)—then the REAL RIDERS show their stuff, the partiers either stay in town and drink or walk it up!!!! hahaha

Sunday will be another day that we can choose “where to fly” like Friday.  We will make the decision accordingly.  This will repeat Monday and Tuesday at the call of the group.

ASSOCIATED EVENTS

Wine Country: Valle de Guadalupe!  At the 3rd annual La Salina Fly-in (2008) a Santa Ana came thru and flushed our event….but alas no time to cry over spilt milk….WINE is another story, and that was the first year we incorporated wine country into our events.  We had a blast…and with last year’s competition heavily oriented towards XC into wine country, a whole new allegiance has been forged.

In fact, one of our newest pilots Alvaro Alvarez, owns a vinyard in Guadalupe!  Soooooo we will plan to take an afternoon and pack it up and visit a couple vineyards.  You do NOT want to miss this!  We are planning it so its not really a plan at all!  Rather if we get a bad weather day..we go!  If we get a good XC day  (La Salina OR Borrego) WE GO!!!  Again, this is an awesome event for non-pilots as well, so bring your buddy, significant other, or Arnold’s maid!!!

We will ALSO be attempting to incorporate some basic competitive tasks. Certainly, an XC comp, the one day. Longest airtime, any day, spot landing and hi-guy.  Problem is that Bajabrent and Flipper are usually doing so much, including the B & B its hard to administer it all.  But we are on it!

Saturday Night will be “I Just Wanna Fly” KAROEKE Night at the Cantina   You will be amazed how many of the local La Salina Community (pilots and non-pilots)  will come and participate with the Fly-in  Karaoke show.

There will be press coverage and awesome ”Flipper” designed t-shirts, Best lookin design in the flying industry, ranked NOS. 1 BY USHPA!!!

FLY-IN PACKAGES

FLY-IN PACKAGES: Fly-in registration/venue access fee(s): $9.95/day; or  $29.95 for entire event.

Accomodations: (BajBrent’s Beachfront Bed and Breakfast, and other beach places)

BajaBrent’s Beachfront Bed and Breakfast (The B-4), is northern Baja’s oldest Bed and Breakfast (est’d 1997).  Located on the La Salina beach directly across from the La Salina Flying ridge, the B-4 offers the quickest and most convenient access to the flightpark.

The mainhouse is enjoyed by all guests,  huge beachfront patio; ASTRO TURFED LZ on beach terrace;  pool table, large HD satellite TV featuring a plethora of paragliding/flying movies; guest refrigerators…YOU ARE ON THE BEACH, (not “near”, or steps away—YOU ARE  ON LA SALINA BEACH)!!!  If you can’t launch from the ridge, and make it to my house, I’ll have to tear up your P-2 card!  HA!

The B-4 features 5 guestrooms, with 15 beds. If you want private accomodations, pls email BajaBrent directly, otherwise ”Hostel” style arrangments incur the following pricing:

1st and 2nd night: $39/night; 3 nights: $99; 5 nights $139;  7 nights: $179. (rates include taxes)

Rates include prepared breakfast (Friday, Sat, Sun mornings); self-serve breakfast (breads/cereal, fruit, coffee, OJ) other mornings.

Sleeping arrangements will be provided on first come/first serve basis.

Bajabrent has also reserved the La Salina Hotel/Cantina rooms for those of you who would prefer your own bed with private bath.  The 3 night package runs $199 for a private room (double occupancy) ;  You can also book a room with two beds/bath for up to 4 pilots for $299 for 3 nights.

Groups of 5 or more qualify for GROUP RATE, contact BajaBrent for more info….

Anyone bringing a non-participatory guest (e.g. significant other sharing your pillow) needs to check with us on special rates accordingly.

CAMPING:  There is no camping permitted on La Salina Beach or on the private property encompassing the flying ridge (10,000 acres). Pls do not appear with a tent/sleeping bag and hope to find a place closeby.  There is a campground 4 miles north but your safety and the protection of your personal belongings, is entirely YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. It also costs $10-$15/night.  So if saving $10-$15/night is worth your risk, then RISK AND REWARD!

As an option: There are a couple empty homes near flightpark that BajaBrent might work out an arrangement for, IF the demand is there, predicated upon a 7 day stay.  Figure $150/person for the week.  But I will need at least 6 pilots to sign up for this in order for it to work.  You would be staying in safe,  secure, environment, sleeping in your sleeping bag and possibly a tent or deck or possibly even a bedroom (1st come first serve). You’d have bathrooms with hot water. And basic kitchen. Non-beachfront, but very near the action.  You can walk to everything including  launch. You will need to arrange prepayment.

In Addition, IF you want a private home, condo, or room, BajaBrent can HOOK YOU UP!  JUST email bajabrent@msn.com

Last but not least… the host, Bajabrent is also the most experienced La Salina paragliding pilot who will celebrate  his 15th “flying anniversary” in February. With over 900 hours of airtime at the site!  His insight/advice are obviously, very helpful.  In fact, site intro fees are usually assessed to non-booking pilot/tour groups.  This is likewise included at no extra charge.
