2008 Fly La Salina Blog Archives

October 2008

2008 Fiesta De Cielo Full Moon Fly-in is AGAIN a big success, but not in the way we anticipated it to be.  Strong Santa Ana conditions undermined Saturday and Sunday free-flight expectations although some powered guys managed to force their way aloft.

Yes Santa Ana’s both threatened  potential attendees and hampered those who braved the “force” but we all still had a great time fraternizing together as pilots and patrons often do, as a result of weather.

But the most significant event, was that of the first day itself: “Fly-in For Faith” which was Thursday October 9, in which Team FlyLaSalina.com together with Baja Seasons Resort hosted the children of the Door of Faith Orphanage for a day of tandem motor flying; horseback riding; luncheon and beach activities at the La Salina Beach.

Team members Jessie, Terry, Flipper and Bajabrent (and videographer Antonio) conducted an Airsport introduction to the DOFO students on Wednesday night before the flying day, to familiarize the children with the activity.  Verbal instruction, demonstrations and video presentation mesmerized the kids for about 45 minutes.

The next day, FlyLaSalina.com Team pilot Terry Flint tandemed over 20 children, ages 5-14 in his Paratoys.com 313 motor quad.

Miguel from Volare Airsports of La Mision flew 7 adult staff members in his ultralight trike from the Baja Seasons Resort.

Up Up and AWAY!!! LOOK at her SMILE!!!!

Flying Flipper demonstrated her free-flight kiting skills on the beach to the enjoyment of children as well.

Lunch of “fillete de hotdogs” , awesome potato salad and other refreshments were provided by our gracious host Baja Seasons, engineered by our good friend Eduardo, Manager of the Resort.

OUR LOSS….

Doc Rudy sharing his "buckeyes" w/ Ohio State alumni: BajaBrent

Tragically TEAM FlyLaSalina.com lost our close friend, devout ultralight-trike pilot, and resident Dr. (retired) on December 18, 2008: Dr. Rudy Gallardo.  Dr. Gallardo lived in La Salina 4 houses north of Bajabrent since 2000.  He was known for his generosity, compassion, and love of our sport.  Many times a week he would launch from the beach and fly sunset out over the Pacific. The Doc was our “local” physician that patched up broken pilots both new and experienced.  He will be greatly missed. But on many a Pacific Sunset,  if one stares  hard enough across the ocean horizon you can see him floating aloft on his new set of wings!  Rudy you will be missed, remembered, and remain a member of Team FlyLaSalina….
