Deemed “The Perfect Ridge” by hang glider pilots in the late 70’s, La Salina is known worldwide as Baja’s best Airsport venue. Launch from the 700’ ridge, located ½ mile eastof Pacific Ocean. Soar for hours, climbing to 3000 ft+ in desert thermals, then land on big/beautiful sandy beach, OR XC into Baja’s world class wine country.

The Fly-in is open to Paragliders, Hang Gliders, PPG, Ultralight Pilots, Base-Jumpers and Enthusiasts: EVERYONE IS INVITED!!!

For non-pilots and observers, tandem flights will be available from some of Southern CA and Mexico’s most experienced trained professionals in paragliding, PPG and ultralight aircraft. If you’ve ever dreamed of soaring like a hawk, raven, eagle, REACH FOR THE SKY…YOUR TIME HAS COME!!!!

The Fiesta begins Thursday, morning May 3 and extends until Tuesday May 8, 2012. This provides up to 6 days and 5 nights at the venue. The main days of the event will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

THE EVENT

This year, we are considering flying up to 5 different coastal sites: Cantamar/Halfway House; La Fonda; La Salina; Salsipuedes; El Borrego; and “The Antennaes” at Punta Banda/Bufadora. The final decision will be made each morning depending on forecasts, weather, and willingness of the participants. Here is a little background:

Cantamar-Halfway House, dates back to before La Salina, and was a popular HG site in the 70′s and 80′s. Last year the Ensenda Open competition pilots and fly-in participants competed by flying from this site back to La Salina and beyond. This year, conditions permitting, we will attempt to include this opporunity again. In fact, we may make this the primary XC run, beginning here and attempting to fly to La Salina, Salsipuedes, and onto Ensenada for @ 50KM. It can be done. The launch is located on private property by individuals known to BajaBrent

Salsipuedes , is our dream flying site: its beauty, ease of access and bouyant air are just so darn fun, you never wanna land!

Front Page Article: BajaBrent soaring Salsipuedes November 1997

You literally drive right up to the launch and run off the bluff @ 200 feet above the ocean.

BajaBrent soaring Salsipuedes Flyin 2011

This year we hope to have an LZ or meeting point at a beach club at San Miguel, which is just past the toll gate! This site is a bit unreliable given it is on the leeside of the prevailing NW wind, But when it works its the berries AND its quicker than getting to launch at LS (15 mins). The launch is located on private property by individuals known to BajaBrent

This year’s new entry is El Borrego, a new site pioneered by the new local Mexican pilot brotherhood! This site was identified last year while traveling by car into wine country during the Comp. festivities. It appears to have tremendous potential as gateway launch to XC into Valle de Guadalupe and beyond…It appears to be an excellent option to La Salina, in the event we get socked in one day with a marine layer. This launch is located on private property and requires permission to fly. ( 30 minute)

Finally there is “The Antennaes Launch” at Punta Banda/Bufadora (1 hour south). This site has been around for many years, but several years ago, it was locked up for security. Well the Mexican brotherhood stepped up to the plate and got a set of keys!!!! HAHAHA It is @ 1000 meters high and promises an excellent glide, even if the thermals aren’t working. However, it too can be a little unreliable, as it is almost on the exact opposite side of Ensenada bay from Salsipuedes….

We have ONE MORE INCREDIBLE SITE, we are discussing. But there are many issues including access, 3+ hrs travel, camping (option) AND therefore would be preserved until the last day of the event, and perhaps require an additional day. It would begin at one of the highest launches in all of Baja, perhaps in all of Mexico. Maybe we can fly to Cabo!!!! More later….

AGENDA

The Fly-in will begin Thursday morning as site intro day, for some, and most likely a fun flying day at La Salina. Come in Wednesday night and be ready to fly Thursday morning. XC and flying events begin Friday.

Thursday night (May 3rd) we hope to feature internationally acclaimed fiddle/flaminko guitar duet of Depue-Dehoyos. This is an amazing spanglish duet that will BLOW YOUR SOCKS OFF! If you wanna know more, google “Alex Depue” or find him on Facebook.

Friday is one day we can certainly consider undertaking the XC flight or elect to try any other flying site based upon conditions. OR we can stay at La Salina.

The full moon is technically on Saturday evening. Thus we want to fly it either Friday or Saturday night. The night BEFORE the scientifically defined full moon, is actually better for photo ops. The moon looks just as full and rises an hour before the sun sets. IF that doesnt work, then Saturday evening IT IS!!!!

Saturday is CINCO DE MAYO! More of a Gringo celebration than Mexican EXCEPT here in Baja, everyone joins in. This day will also likely be a La Salina day, as we do NOT want to drive towards Rosarito or anywhere near Ensenada. IT WOULD be possible to fly Salsipuedes as we can return to La Salina without having to drive into Ensenada…more later.

Saturday is ALSO the 30th semi-annual Rosarito-Ensenada bike race. As mentioned before we will want to avoid the roads between 10-2 and Ensenada under all circumstances! BUT there is nothing that says, if you are a bike enthusiast, bring your bike jump on in the race, and have fun! You’ll only miss one day of flying, and if thats a good day, endure the razzing from the rest of us! But hey it could be a lot of fun. Maybe a family member or friend might wanna come with you and take that day to ride in the race? Trust me its not a serious race….more of a spectacle of good natured partiers on bikess….UNTIL they hit EL TIGRE (the backside road leading up to launch)—then the REAL RIDERS show their stuff, the partiers either stay in town and drink or walk it up!!!! hahaha

Sunday will be another day that we can choose “where to fly” like Friday. We will make the decision accordingly. This will repeat Monday and Tuesday at the call of the group.

ASSOCIATED EVENTS

Wine Country: Valle de Guadalupe! At the 3rd annual La Salina Fly-in (2008) a Santa Ana came thru and flushed our event….but alas no time to cry over spilt milk….WINE is another story, and that was the first year we incorporated wine country into our events. We had a blast…and with last year’s competition heavily oriented towards XC into wine country, a whole new allegiance has been forged.

In fact, one of our newest pilots Alvaro Alvarez, owns a vinyard in Guadalupe! Soooooo we will plan to take an afternoon and pack it up and visit a couple vineyards. You do NOT want to miss this! We are planning it so its not really a plan at all! Rather if we get a bad weather day..we go! If we get a good XC day (La Salina OR Borrego) WE GO!!! Again, this is an awesome event for non-pilots as well, so bring your buddy, significant other, or Arnold’s maid!!!

We will ALSO be attempting to incorporate some basic competitive tasks. Certainly, an XC comp, the one day. Longest airtime, any day, spot landing and hi-guy. Problem is that Bajabrent and Flipper are usually doing so much, including the B & B its hard to administer it all. But we are on it!

Saturday Night will be “I Just Wanna Fly” KAROEKE Night at the Cantina You will be amazed how many of the local La Salina Community (pilots and non-pilots) will come and participate with the Fly-in Karaoke show.

There will be press coverage and awesome ”Flipper” designed t-shirts, Best lookin design in the flying industry, ranked NOS. 1 BY USHPA!!!

FLY-IN PACKAGES

FLY-IN PACKAGES: Fly-in registration/venue access fee(s): $9.95/day; or $29.95 for entire event.

Accomodations: (BajBrent’s Beachfront Bed and Breakfast, and other beach places)

BajaBrent’s Beachfront Bed and Breakfast (The B-4), is northern Baja’s oldest Bed and Breakfast (est’d 1997). Located on the La Salina beach directly across from the La Salina Flying ridge, the B-4 offers the quickest and most convenient access to the flightpark.

The mainhouse is enjoyed by all guests, huge beachfront patio; ASTRO TURFED LZ on beach terrace; pool table, large HD satellite TV featuring a plethora of paragliding/flying movies; guest refrigerators…YOU ARE ON THE BEACH, (not “near”, or steps away—YOU ARE ON LA SALINA BEACH)!!! If you can’t launch from the ridge, and make it to my house, I’ll have to tear up your P-2 card! HA!

The B-4 features 5 guestrooms, with 15 beds. If you want private accomodations, pls email BajaBrent directly, otherwise ”Hostel” style arrangments incur the following pricing:

1st and 2nd night: $39/night; 3 nights: $99; 5 nights $139; 7 nights: $179. (rates include taxes)

Rates include prepared breakfast (Friday, Sat, Sun mornings); self-serve breakfast (breads/cereal, fruit, coffee, OJ) other mornings.

Sleeping arrangements will be provided on first come/first serve basis.

Bajabrent has also reserved the La Salina Hotel/Cantina rooms for those of you who would prefer your own bed with private bath. The 3 night package runs $199 for a private room (double occupancy) ; You can also book a room with two beds/bath for up to 4 pilots for $299 for 3 nights.

Groups of 5 or more qualify for GROUP RATE, contact BajaBrent for more info….

Anyone bringing a non-participatory guest (e.g. significant other sharing your pillow) needs to check with us on special rates accordingly.

CAMPING: There is no camping permitted on La Salina Beach or on the private property encompassing the flying ridge (10,000 acres). Pls do not appear with a tent/sleeping bag and hope to find a place closeby. There is a campground 4 miles north but your safety and the protection of your personal belongings, is entirely YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. It also costs $10-$15/night. So if saving $10-$15/night is worth your risk, then RISK AND REWARD!

As an option: There are a couple empty homes near flightpark that BajaBrent might work out an arrangement for, IF the demand is there, predicated upon a 7 day stay. Figure $150/person for the week. But I will need at least 6 pilots to sign up for this in order for it to work. You would be staying in safe, secure, environment, sleeping in your sleeping bag and possibly a tent or deck or possibly even a bedroom (1st come first serve). You’d have bathrooms with hot water. And basic kitchen. Non-beachfront, but very near the action. You can walk to everything including launch. You will need to arrange prepayment.

In Addition, IF you want a private home, condo, or room, BajaBrent can HOOK YOU UP! JUST email bajabrent@msn.com

Last but not least… the host, Bajabrent is also the most experienced La Salina paragliding pilot who will celebrate his 15th “flying anniversary” in February. With over 900 hours of airtime at the site! His insight/advice are obviously, very helpful. In fact, site intro fees are usually assessed to non-booking pilot/tour groups. This is likewise included at no extra charge.

After returning to San Diego, after the Christmas tree season, BB immediately after Christmas returned to La Salina arriving December 26. Exhausted, he took a couple days to recoop, then took his last flight of the year December 30 (conditions were marginal the other 2 days). A one hour flight capped the year.

January 2012 began like January 2011. High Pressure set in throughout the southwest USA. Conditions were beautiful, sunny, warm, mid 70′s…but NO WIND!

Two weeks transpired with similar conditions. BB got in a couple of sledders, and nothing more.

On/about mid month, things changed!!!! Finally, BB logged 7 straight days of flying 7.5 hours of airtime, with fairly challenging conditions on a couple days. Two flights exceeded 2 hours. The final flying day, January 22 gave up two flying sessions from 11:30-1:00PM and then a 1 hour awesome glass off flight of one hour (3:30PM).

During BB’s absence, the Ejido made SIGNIFICANT alterations to their cultivation area atop the mesa. Its important to be aware, that the road to launch has been re-routed through the south end of the mesa. Its no longer a 30 minute drive; rather more like 45. There are two gates (in addition to the opening gate) that must be opened. And any attempt to navigate after dark is “challenging” to say the least. After a nighttime glassoff with Flipper,, wherein BB sunk out before top landing, he had to hike to the top and retrieve the Exploder, then drive out—it was the first time BB had driven the new route….he got lost for an hour….on the backside of the mesa! Never seen so many HUGE bunny rabbits in his life…bigger than some of the coyotes!!! Its good to know the food chain is thriving at La Salina!

Speaking of which, a new couple of hawks have joined TeamFlyLaSalina! And they love BBs Sigma 8! “Herman” the hawk is now a star of the show. Ever since BB started flying, this season, Herman has been readily available to share the air…and the thermals! Herman is unafraid of the paraglider, and in fact, seems to boat around sometimes in formation to BBs wing!

BB has not been good at recharging the GoPro, but will do so before the next flying session. Herman will hopefully be ready to show his stuff!

2011 will clearly be considered one of the biggest eventful years at Baja’s Best Flying venue: La Salina. (these are quick mentions of points to be developed later below 1/21/12

The year began with the announcement/planning for the 5th annual Fiesta De Cielo Full Moon Fly-in. Shortly after publication, Fink, contacted me about the possibility of an FAI comp, to which we agreed should be merged with the Fly-in.

Shortly thereafter Juan Gonzalez came to fly La Salina, with me almost every week–sometimes several times/week.  Lucas Lujan likewise became integral to Fink’s program, and the Ensenada Open portion began to materialize;

By April, site rehablitation became critical mass, as we anticipated a healthy group of pilots, public, politicians, and press.

Several important things came outta the events to perpetuate the future of flying opportuniites at La Salina (wine country, Phil’s flights, new pilots, exposure)

Terry Flint, once again, hosted 2 Door of Faith Orphanage, fun days for the children at Baja Seasons;

On a tragic note we suffered the loss of Bob Armond, Steve Starwalt suffered a serious accident on launch, Jessie Ortiz, suffered another disabling injury as well.

La Salina TURF WARS

It began with Torrey Pines Gliderport. Over many years TP has gone from being a weedy-sandy launch, to cultivation a putting green launch. A golfer might mistake TP launch for the 19th hole at the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course located immediately next door. Indeed the envy of many worldwide flight park administrators.

Now, click through to La Salina, Baja, where BajaBrent (BB) has lugged up thousands of square feet of room sized carpet over the past 14+ years. Each an overlay of the aging slabs from the LA Ritz Carlton which first adorned North and South launch back in
1996.*

But BB dreamed of a way to cover the launches in a dramatic, beautiful, resilient and safe ground cover for pilots to enjoy. But
the concept of “real grass” or sod, was environmentally forbidden in the arid desert ridge, where even TeamFlyLaSalina member— Rachel the Rattlesnake— had to scrounge for a morning droplet of heaven’s dew.

Meanwhile, for many seasons BajaBrent scoured online for more rugs/carpets to cover the hillside, but nothing close to the vision in his
mind’s eye.

Then came the Fifth Annual Fiesta Del Cielo and the First Annual Ensenada Open Paragliding Competition. It was time to “pimp out” the launches for everyone’s use, enjoyment and most importantly: SAFETY. After all, it was possible that the world’s aviation attention might briefly gaze upon La Salina. The eclectic mosaic of trashy remnants was neither
eye catching or crash worthy. BajaBrent went online to research his dream:ASTRO-Turf

First, came the eradication of “Boulder-Doom”, the treacherous rim of rock encasing the south end of north launch, (see this blog):

Second came, the TURF! BB started googling/ebaying the Astro-turf back in 2005. He had written many vendors. MOST wanted $2-$4 for “putting green” style
artificial grass, that didn’t appear to have resiliency to the type of demands
needed for our sport. He contacted many an offeror, as far away as Miami Beach where one sports bar offered 4000 s.ft. to anyone who would cart away. He calculated airfare, shipping, etc. and simply couldn’t make the numbers work. Ditto for Phoenix. So years went by and nothing sprang forth asa reasonable ASTRO turf option.

When BB set the date for the May 5th Annual fly-in, back in early January, he restarted his search for the ever elusive ASTRO-turf BIG DEAL!!! His vision evolved from dream to action plan in
March when a LA area bankrupt soccer league offered NFL grade ASTRO-turf at liquidation prices. This stuff, new, cost substantially more than
the Costco or Home Depot brand outdoor artificial grass. But this vendor,
needed to move their turf, REALLY fast.

BB rounded up TeamFlyLaSalina member Terry Flint (aka
Bullwinkle) and his pickup, and on April 21, the day after the boulders
disappeared, so did BB and Bullwinkle: off to LA!!!

When they ultimately rendezvoused in LA, what they
discovered to was amazing…..10’s of 1000’s of feet of beautiful
ASTRO-turf….ALMOST brand new! Apparently
the Soccer League had cut a deal on a gigantic facility, placed in new turf,
and within months the deal went south….and the league needed to rip out the
turf. With a front end loader, backhoe
and semi trailers, they ripped, scooped, transported, then dumped upside down
mounds of turf behind an industrial complex in south LA. Although the turf was beautiful, it wasn’t
exactly wrapped in nice manageable rolls awaiting our arrival!

To make matters FAR WORSE, what was NOT disclosed in the CL
ads, was that the turf was saturated with fine black rubberized artificial
sand, and banded together with tape strips.
You see when professional ASTRO turf is laid out in stadiums, they lay
it out in 15 foot wide strips that are taped together at the seams, until the
field is covered. Next they take pulverized rubber pellets, made out of
recycled tires, and pour over the entire ASTRO-turf surface. These pellets—a little grainier than
sand—sift down through the turf to compress the turf to the underlying surface. The result is that the turf will not move,
albeit budge, even under the pressure/stress of a 300 lb linebacker (or 2, 3,
or 4) upending, tackling, and generally slamming a 250 lb running back, and
then everyone else jumping on!!!!—the turf doesn’t budge!

Now for all you sports fans, you know the turf goes nowhere.
It’s not intended to. But then again, when it is removed, it is not done so
with human hands, backs, will or might…its more like a CATEPILLAR heavy duty
front end loader! Yep that black sand
weighs a ton! And now there stands
Bullwinkle (BW) and BB gazing at their dream, buried in black death!!!

What’s a couple of Baja-Haitians to do???? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

BB knows…..LETS GET SOME MEXICANS! When it comes to hard work, the Mexicans
always know how to avoid making a hard
job even harder. And certainly—when it
comes to this type of hard work—can outsmart a lawyer and a tax accountant:
EACH AND EVERY TIME!

So AT 8:00 AM, the next morning, BB sets out to
locate Mexican reinforcements, in the
City of Angels: SOUTH LA!!!! Cruising
around industrial street corners and alleyways, BB comes upon a commercial
street corner with a “99Cent” store on one corner and a “Dick’s Liquor” on the
other…and alas in front of the Mercado is a Mexican worker cluster. When BB pulls up, windows down, blonde locks a
flowing, the Mexicans take notice! “is
it work? Is it a Guerra? Or is this undercover ICE?” Alas when BB questions “Quiere
trabajan?” They figure the deal: it’s a
hippy-looking Guerro with a scheme up his sleeve…and ten offer their services
with everyone speaking in Spanglish…BB speaks this fluently. $10/hr/man is agreed.

Hector, Pedro, Julio, Rodriguez, and Ole Jaime climb aboard,
and off they go for the 5 minute return trip to the ASTRO bumps. Bullwinkle is yet to arrive, but BB and the
crew unload and survey the project. BB
knows he will need all the muscle he can muster, and 5 grown Mexican men look
like they can manage, with or w/o BB (preferably the latter in BBs opinion).

So it’s time to tackle the first 5 yards of Charger’s stadium! Yank, pull, tug, grunt, oomph, puff, and
grunt some more….the VW size bump won’t budge. Hack, spit, snort, and BB jumps
in and its grunt, oomph, puff, then an “A JUNTO” GRUNT! It moves an inch! They stand erect, then back up and take a
breath! Ole Jaime and Rodriguez turn and
walk another direction. BB yelps “Espera! Espera! Adonde Van?”
Jaime waives his hand in the air, and neither looks back! Now we’re 4!

After about an hour of effort, they manage to tear off a
sheet, 15 x 18’ sheet. It is turned
upside down, and altogether, they lift an edge and begin shaking out the
insidious black death, that sifts back through the green fiber. This process is repeated on each side of the
rectangular piece. BB eventually cuts it
in half, and with 3 of them shaking an edge and BB beating the front with a push
broom, the black death falls to the ground.
When flipped upright, a true prize is admired: the turf is vibrant
emerald green, hardly a mark, and lush, very lush: it’s BEAUTIFUL!!! Over the
course of about 90 minutes, they shake, beat, clean, and roll our first two
slabs: a little under 300 s.ft. BB would like
10,000 s.ft! Its a long way to go,
and they only have 2 days to do this. Only
one thing for certain….BB NEEDS MORE MEXICANS… So back to DICK’S LIQUOR!

Upon return, Bullwinkle has arrived with his heavy
duty pickup. He has also picked up
hardware, tackle, brooms , straps and plastic bags. BB retrieved another 3 Mexicans: Philippi,
Jose, and Raoule. BB already screened them to be ready, willing and able to
work at this project.

They attack another small lump. With the actual increase in
Mexican Power, they process another 300 s/ft in about another hour. But at this rate, they ain’t goinna get to goal
even at 8hrs/day. As Bullwinkle takes
off to score lunch for the troop, BB calculates, time, money, meals, and this
deal is getting pricey!

During the break, Philippi, and Hector take inventory of
Terry’s toys. They look at the hitch on
BBs shiny Exploder (Ford Explorer) and suggest a different plan. The lumps are gargantuan VW being the
smallest size, and Hummer being closer to the larger size. Their plan uses a tow strap around the hitch
to yank each corner of the turf away from the rest of the pile, cut, shake, and
roll to size.

Over the course of the next several hours, they perfect the
process. By the end of the first 8
hours, 4,000 s.ft. are ready to go. This
story is getting LONGGGGGGGGGGGG….. so I will ramp it up!

The next morning, at 7:00AM BB rents a trailer in San Diego
and drive back to LA. BB whips around
Dick’s and retrieve half the crew from the day before and three new bees. They get to the ASTRO bumps by 9:30. While the crew gets started,BB decides to
unhitch the tandem rental trailer, himself: no big deal.

Just after BB unhitches, the trailer balances itself on its
four tires. As he jumps in the Explorer to
pull away, as he turns perpendicular to depart, the tandem starts rolling towards
BB! He brakes the car, and jump out to
intercept, but it’s already got momentum….SCRRRRRUNCH goes the tongue into the
rear passenger door! @#$%&&!!!
Hector witnessed the comedy from the start and arrived just in time to
divert further damage. Trailer secured,
BB gazea and sulks at the blue tinted crease in the side of his shiney SUV. There goes another 500 BUX into this project!

In the middle of the afternoon, they have a total of 6,000
s.ft. processed. The black death sand
became, 10-12 inches deep across 2,000 sq.ft of asphalt. At one point, as BB wheeled his Exploder around and the mid-carriage caught on a lump of turf, the wheels spun, and in spite of 4
wheel drive, the wheels dug their grave.
Even with the thrust of 6 grown men progress was hopeless! 30 minutes later, AAA cavalry arrived!

The wrecker driver took one look at BBSpredicament, and claimed
there was nothing he could do! I was in
shock! He claimed “insurance” and his
boss forbade him from wading his truck into the black quick sand. BB protested,
pleaded then begged! Since when
does the element prevent a driver from rescuing a victim. Obviously, if I looked like J-Lo he would’ve
risked his wrecker and his life, forget the boss! But when your BB, if you don’t have cleavage,
a couple Jacksons can move mountains.
Ten minutes later, the Exploder is free!

Day 2 ends with 9000 s.ft ready to go. They load 2 trailers, one of which, Bullwinkle
takes to his home in Salton Sea. BB takes
my load of 3000 s.ft to Diego. We agree
to meet the next morning. Terry will
travel to Bob Armond’s to score a 3rd trailer, as they do not want to
take a rental over the border. Armond
graciously weighs in to help the TeamFlyLaSalina . His trailer has crossed into Mexico and back
many times over the years.

As BB drives back to Diego, he is excited over the “dream
come true” possibility at La Salina. BUT
he also recognizes that transporting two trailers (and one pickup truck) full
of ASTRO turf over the border may be a problem for Mexican customs.

Over his 14 years, BB has transported all sorts of things
south, with little trouble at the Mexican border. But it’s not unusual to be pulled into
secondary for closer inspection. The prospect of two trucks, and trailers laden
with fake grass, unless absolutely lucky, would certainly require a visit to
secondary. Then what?

Plan “A” was to make a run for the border and attempt to “spanglish” through the challenge. Maybe that and a little mordida? Who knows???

“Plan B” was to contact Mexican Tourism in Ensenada and see if they would give me some type of letter authorizing the transport. If there was some type of necessary tariff, so be it, but BB figured a little “municipal muscle” might move things forward, with a little less scrutiny. Carlos from
Tourism, through Lucas promised it would be ‘no problema” and would have me a letter the next morning.

Friday morning, April 30th BB again rushes north to LA. In less than 90 minutes BB has had 4 Mexican help him process an additional 1500 s/ft. The ASTRO turf processing system has been optimized! There is now 7000 sf of turf for Baja.

Bullwinkle arrives with Armond’s trailer after only 4 hours of sleep. The crew loads the balance ofturf on Armond’s trailer and BW’s pickup. The team heads south. By 2:00PM, the team arrives at BB’s home in Cardiff by the Sea (San Diego). Knowing that his departure, will be his last time stateside for the next several weeks, BB runs errands while Bullwinkle
naps.

One of the necessary tasks is getting the Tourism letter. It’s now mid afternoon, but no email or letter. Secretary Marko Novella, is OK with the letter, and his office faxes over a copy while BB hitches up his trailer to his Exploder. He wakes BW. Juan Gonzalez has agreed to meet us at the Otay border and escort us across to help negotiate if necessary. We cross at 5:15.

Sure enough, we are sent straight to secondary. After back/forth negotiations, the Mexican Border agents deny us entry. The Border
Jefe, left at 5. They don’t buy the Secretary’s letter either. We are
instructed to return on Monday!!!! We are then diverted back into the US line of vehicles crossing north.

Upon denial of entry into Mexico, your return to the states, is somewhat facilitated as you join the northbound traffic within 10 cars of the gate. Once at the gate, however, the US officer does not know of why you are there. And of course, we have two loaded shipments of rolled fake grass…and of course we are sent to secondary as well.

Secondary inspection at Otay US Customs, is the slowest process known to man! Admittedly our cargo was a little unusual, but BB had all sorts of documentation to verify the transaction. Never mind, that, you will be required to sit there 2 hours regardless! And that they did.

At 9:00PM we pulled into Cardiff, again. Because BW needed to return to Salton Sea, his truckload of turf was unloaded into BB’s front yard.

Bright and early the next morning, BB decided to shoot the border—solo—. After all, he neededto try to get the turf to La Salina as it was getting close to the events, and he had a lot of other projects. If he could get one load down, he could come back later in the day and repeat the process, three times, if necessary.

He got to the border, and just as he started over, the agents were asleep, and he started towards the lane to freedom—just at the last second, the agent jumped up—rushed towards him and sent him to secondary. Unfortunately, a few agents were working the morning shift. After
suffering through the same process, and another 2 hours in US secondary, he made it home at 4 in the afternoon…another day wasted! He decided to wait till Monday.

Since BW could no longer help in transport, BB contacted TeamFlyLaSalina member Steve Starwalt. Steve was residing in Rosarito Beach, and since he owned a custom door Maquiladora in TJ, had a truck he could help with.

First thing Monday morning Brent was able to communicate to the Ensenada Tourism Office , and the border agency. The border agency wanted the Secretary office to “fax” a copy of his letter to them, so that when BB crossed they could compare copies to validate. By noon, BBwas emailed and confirmed of the fax.

Starwalt and BB left Cardiff at 1 for the Otay border. This time we proceeded directly tosecondary. BB went into custom’s office
to present his FM2, passport, letter(s), and email copies. As to be expected, they never received thefax from tourism, or somehow misplaced it.
They took a look at BB’s copy, and went into the back room. They had us wait until the Jefe had his lunch.

At 2:30, out popped a young looking agent—dressed in full military formal regalia…reflective aviator sunglasses, white, red, green, and gold sashes. Brass buttons, metallic medals, and rainbow ribbons adorned his chest. He looked like an 18 year old Boy Scout!

He marched to and fro, yakking on his walkie talkie.BB showed his my papers. He marched over and examined our merchandise. Starwalt
stayed outta the fray and off to the side. BB then showed him his
TeamFlyLaSalina jacket which says “Volamos La Baja” he cocked his head, then a big smile broke out! He Zoroed the papers, waved at the team and goose-stepped back to the building.

In disbelief , Starwalt and BB winced at each other, shook their heads, snickered, jumped in their trucks…as soon as they cleared the gate,
they drove across to the 3, grabbed a cerveza and had a HUGE LAUGH, a multitude of high fives later, and another cerveza and off they headed for La Salina! Viva Mexxico!

The next morning, Ponchi-chita (Francisco) and Enrique woke BB to begin the unload. First @2000 + s.ft were laid on the beach terrace in front of BBs. That afternoon, BB and Enrique transported the other 5000+ s.ft to launch.

Because of his pledge to Bob Armond-to get his trailer back by Thursday morning—BB decided to postpone the launch turf layout until his return. For security purposes it was decided to hide rolls on launch until a couple of days before the event.

That afternoon, BB recruited Bullwinkle’s son “Rocky” (yes now you are getting the rationale for the nickname), to drive his second truck/trailer north, as Starwalt could not do so. Tuesday afternoon, they headed
north through Otay again. AGAIN, in spite of no cargo, they were sent to secondary. BB was beginning to look around the compound to see if he could buy a little house or condo there. AGAIN they were stuck in customs for another two hours.

Upon leaving customs, Rocky and BB headed north on the 805 due to traffic issues on the 5. BB was driving his older exploder Jade towing Armond’s trailer and Rocky was driving BB’s newer Exploder pulling the second trailer.

About halfway north, a Chip’s officer pulled BB over and issued him a ticket for NO SEATBELT! BB while wilting in secondary had released his belt and forgotten to rebuckle!

BW was supposed to meet BB at his Cardiff home the following (Wed) morning to retrieve Armond’s trailer and return it to Palm Springs (where Bob lived). Apparently BW forgot, and failed to appear the next day. His cell phone was dead as well.

Thus Wednesday morning BajaBrent arose, attached the trailer and drove the 6 hour round trip. It wasreally great to see Bob, at his newer place.
It was a bit remote, but Bob seemed very happy. They shared a beer and a moment of stories as Bob toured BB around the place. Armond had
some interesting plans including PPG training, desert living and growing date palms!

BB returned to Baja that afternoon. The following Sunday, May 8, Poncho, Enrique and BB returned to North launch to lay out the turf. Simply said: It looks SPECTACULAR!

Yes, this story was long. But so was the project. I felt important to detail the undertaking for others to appreciate the substantial investment of time, resources, and money.

This was not an individual accomplishment, but a team effort by many people, and pilots a few of which deserve honorable mention.

Terry Flint:(Bullwinkle) for help north of the border and a good faith effort to help get the turf to La Salina (he suffered in secondary);

Juan Gonzalez : for his attempt at negotiating us through the Mexican customs on Friday;

Sr. Marko Novello, Secretary of Tourism for Ensenada Baja, (letter to Mexican Customs—it helped );

Steve Starwalt for driving Astro Turf south Monday morning;

“Rocky”Terry’s son for driving the trailer on the return trip north;

Bob Armond, for lending us his trailer;

As many of you know, Bob Armond perished June 3rd in an ultra light accident inJoshua Tree State Park. He was longtime Baja PPG instructor and resident. He was a great person, fun guy, and good friend. He will be missed.

Likewise, and unfortunately, Steve Starwalt was seriously injured on North Launch 2 days after we placed the astro turf on the same. Conditions were very strong that afternoon, Steve had a brand new glider, and lined up in the opposite direction that he always used. Steve is a P-4, a Team pilot at FlyLaSalina, and knows La Salina quite well. Unfortunately too many wrong things culminated at one time. He suffered serious head, back, spinal, and knee injuries. Fortunately he is recovering. He is walking, talking, and joking as always. He has returned to Seattle to re-cooperate.
He hopes to be flying again within the year. He will be missed at La Salina!

As a final note, BB personally invested over a hundred hours in the ASTRO turf odyssey not to mention thousands of dollars in cash; and of course the ancillary “stupidity costs” such as the crease in his car door from the trailer and the seatbelt ticket…and countless personal time in the enhancement of the La Salina launches.

He does not have the benefit of receiving income from the site, except a small amount recovered during the flying events. He does not expect to earn a profit from the site. But if some type of fee arrangement is eventually invoked, in which he is a part, please understand that it will be many many many years before THIS investment is recovered, let alone sufficient resources to cover the ongoing investment thathe undertakes to maintain the site year round. Thanks to all of you who understand and support this ongoing endeavor.

With an honorable mention going to Juan Gonzalez who
contributed a fair share carpet patches
in spring of 2011.

Not since 1996 has La Salina Flying ridge undergone such a serious flying site rehabilitation. With the full consent, consultation, and blessings of the Ejido La Mision (the owners of the 15,000 acre flying ridge), Bajabrent (BB) retained Mexican contractors, and laborers (and weighed in himself), to reconstruct the 3 primary launches, roadway from free road to launches, hiking trail and LZ.

The most important achievement was the removal of dozens of large protruding boulders from the south side of North Launch,

BackBreaking Boulders of La Salina

which for years, had been the backbreaking danger in launching in cross conditions. In spite of attempts to carpet-soften the blows, numerous arms, legs, backs, collar bones, etc. had been shattered on these bruisers over the years. It has forced some from the sport!

But to get the job done right, while avoiding a deluge of rain, the team had to get there! First up was the road access to launch.

Workin the chain-gang for a rockless ride. BB, Miguel, y Ponchita (2 supervisors, one worker: very mexican!)

Although BB prefers to hike 9 out of 10 times to launch, because of the upcoming flying events, and the need to facilitate launch access for emergency vehicles, spectators, press, physically challenged pilots, (and lazy/smoker pilots), the road needed cleared.

Over the years the road has been shifted, as the Ejido has needed to divert the same to facilitate agricultural and ranching endeavors. The new roads have been wrought with potholes, protruding embedded boulders, and washboard topography. Meanwhile the old road always had issues especially upon the grade leading upgrade from the lake, and the road running parallel to the ridge, always riveted like a bombed Iraqi freeway!

In the early days, BB occasionally would drive a sedan to launch. But in recent years only Mad Maxine was allowed to make the excursion, then most recently Jingle-Jade! BUT ALAS happy days have returned as the roadbed has been transformed into a user friendly access road. BUT before pilots are permitted to use the same, they need to check-in with BajaBrent or the Ejido La Mision. Access fees, pilot registration and liability waivers are NOW in force. (see below).

It took 1.5 days to clear the roadway up to launch. Midway through the second day, Flipper tripped on the North Launch carpet while inflating in strong conditions. Simultaneously she got popped, and took a hit on a protruding boulder. This was just an hour before the back hoe arrived to remove the same.

Flippers last Rock-Tango

The whole incident was a sobering reminder of the importance of this project. Flipper suffered a couple of bruises and a ornery headache, but recovered nicely, to have–hopefully—the last boulder-war story!

Upon arrival of the Hoe, BB had Enrique clear the brush surrounding north launch. Now it will be much easier to top land. Likewise brush and boulders were removed east of the launch/roadway to provide for HG access and perhaps for PPGs to land/launch. Perhaps even Bullwinkle’s PPG quad!

Next came North Launch, itself: them D#@N BOULDERS!!! BB wasn’t convinced Enrique could clear them with a backhoe and front end loader. That illustrates why BB went to law school and NOT heavy equipment school. Enrique gave a confident “wink” and a “grin” as he set about hoeing them outta there.

But with each rock Enrique would hoe up, another 5 came with it! BB nicknamed the project: “Pandora’s ROX”!!!!

Yikes! one rock leads to another!

BB, ever mindful of the environmental consequences of similar projects, was very concerned about the ultimate placement of the removed boulders. At first, it seemed logical to move them to the east or north of the launch area, HOWEVER, as Pandora’s ROX unfolded, it became intrinsically clear that this was NOT going to be possible, unless BB wished to recreate the great wall of China surrounding the launch area.

Enrique Opens Pandoras ROX!!!!

Alas BB, Ponchita and Enrique conferred and it was unanimously decided that the only solution was to shove the boulders over the edge of ridge, making sure of course that there were no pedestrians, livestock, or other beings below the oncoming bombardment. Fortunately, the fallout was to the north of the switchback so as not to endanger the pathway with debris. However, mid-launch was directly in the path, an unavoidable consequence: BOMBS AWAY!!!

Enrique set about to dig, push, re-position, pull, push, shove–reposition– hump, dump, and push some more. His skill at operating the hoe, was amazing….and in many situations quite daring as he teetered over the edge of the cliff, with two hydraulic arms thrusting the hoe in the air, her front-loader offsetting the rig, dangling in midair! Ponchita and BB kept their distance, admiring the breathtaking performance of a man at work, in seemingly choreographed lockstep with his amazing machine.

Hours passed quickly as a barrage of volcanic boulders–bigger than quads– avalanched below. Each departed and 15 seconds later could be seen broken into fragments steaming through mid-launch coming to rest on the distant desert floor.

Four hours later, as the smoke settled, what remained was a moonscape of rock, smaller boulders, sand, soil and holes—scores of holes—of all shapes and sizes.

BB pondered whether he’d done the “right thing”, as it looked like such a mess! The committee conferred again, and Enrique assured BB that 10 loads of dirt would solve the problem. But that would need to wait for another day. Meanwhile, the crew departed to South Launch.

South Launch, historically has been a much more inviting place to launch one’s glider. However, its grade is more flat than North, and therefore requires a little more finesse on inflation, that can actually cause the pilot to get “popped” when the wing hits the power zone. Furthermore, BB believes that although south has “La Salina West” profile, for launching in those predominate conditions, it tends to be windier than North Launch by 1-2 knots.

In the earlier days, when BB began flying LS, south launch seemed more forgiving and acceptable. Over the years, however, North has won out as the primary launch in spite of its boulder-danger. On the occasion a pilot would launch from south, it became the exception rather than the rule.

HOWEVER, THIS IS ABOUT TO CHANGE! On the day that the hoe arrived on south launch, it was decided to remove ALL brush, cacti, and debris from the west side and below the launch @ 20 feet. Enrique expertly swept the hoe back/forth until this was accomplished, and what remained became strangely reminiscent to BB, as he recalled how South Launch originally appeared in the late 90′s.!

In spite of year after year, maintenance of the brush around south launch, apparently the use of Mexican laborers was insufficient to overcome the annual growth of shrubs, bushes and cacti! It wasnt until the hoe removed the base of the brush that it became apparent that over all these years, the desert had reclaimed a significant portion of the front of the launch! So significant, that in the last 5 years, pilots were actually launching from the flat-top portion of the launch, unable to layout or align themselves on the lower portion!

With the debris now cleared, it is quite obvious how wonderful South Launch is again! Ultimately it really was not a tremendous amount of foliage that needed to be removed. In fact, it took Enrique less than an hour to reform South

Launch into an incredibly useful launch area, for N, NW and W flying days! Its also an ideal tandem launch area as well!

DAY 3: By the time BB reached launch, 4 loads of dirt had already been dumped on the lunar landscape. Miguel had come w/ BB that morning and began a 6 hour process of pitching smaller boulders over the ridge edge from both launches. The wind was HOWLING between 25-30 knots! No flyovers today!

Upon the arrival of the 7th load of dirt, Enrique rolled up on the hoe and began spreading the earth around north launch. Within an hour the surface transformed into a stable foundation projecting outward and over the front of the ridge. it evolved miraculously into beautiful platform with a slight slope dovetailing sweetly into the carpeted status quo launch.

BB decided to invest in 3 more truckloads–2 to cover east top of north launch, so there would be no more rocks to trip on while walking up to launch. The third load would be used to smooth over any rock debris to the east of South Launch where Bullwinkle would launch his PPG, conditions permitting.

After the dirt was expertly maneuvered, BB set his sights on the Super South Launch, at the ultimate south end of the main ridge; a launch used only on S or SW days. Once again Enrique wiped clean the debris/brush surrounding the launch area. And once again, what was revealed was a much more “user-friendly” launch pad! Again the brush, over the years, had reclaimed much of the launch, as hand laborers simply could not hack back the growth as quickly as it returned. Enrique and his hoe, changed the progress in less than 20 minutes, and with very minor environmental impact: a win-win situation for everything!

At long last, the project winded down, BB marveled at the accomplishments. North launch had been ridden of the nasty boulders, transformed into a mega-launch for multiple glider types. A place to launch into NW, W or even SW winds without the fear of tripping over boulders, or having lines ripped across volcanic edges. No more velcro grabbing brush to entangle one’s wing! Or perhaps just a place to sit and gaze out across the desert valley and over the beaches to the great pacific horizon: the jewel had been polished!

Introducing THE NEW NORTH LAUNCH!

South launches likewise ridden of entangling brush, and debris, expanding their aprons for all pilots to enjoy. Mission accomplished!

As the rehab crew departed that day, BB directed Enrique to minimize or repair any areas along the roadway where soil had been cannibalized to repair the roadway potholes.

Touch-up in some roadbed was necessary to minimize future problems.

This included the burying of a dead cow who had been ravaged by disease and perished in the previous 2 days. An hour and a half later the gate at the free road was closed on another successful day repairing the launch and roadway at FlyLaSalina.com.

AS SET FORTH ABOVE: In consideration of the generosity of the Ejido La Mision, some old policies, and new policies are being set forth for pilots to abide by, for use of the La Salina Flying Ridge, which includes any access or use.

The old policy: $5/pilot/day. or $20/carload. Many/most pilots ignored this over the last several years. Those days are over. ALL the property used for use/access to the La Salina launches, LZ, switchback path, etc. (15,000 acres) is ALL private property belonging to the Ejido La Mision. You either need to stop at the Ejido office, beside the La Mision police station and pay; or stop at Oscar’s Market (across the street); or find BajaBrent and make payment. Otherwise you may be considered a trespasser on private property. Upon payment you should have a receipt demonstrating the same in case requested by enforcement officials.

Beginning May 1: new policy $10/day; $30/week; There will be an annual registration/use fee soon to be announced.

Pilot registration: There will be a short registration form for pilots when paying the fee. Name, rank, serial number type of stuff. Not to heavy, just so folks know whose on the property.

liability waiver: This will be implemented @ May 1 at the demand of the Ejido. All pilots will need to execute a waiver of liability in Spanish before being permitted to fly at La Salina Flying Ridge. If you do not speak/read spanish, you will also execute an English version. This not an “elective” request. This will be REQUIRED, failure to do so could result in arrest for trespass.

Although La Salina has been somewhat “lax” over the years about fee/access to the ridge, with all the site repairs, events, and publicity, it became apparent that more and more pilots will visit the flying site. Accordingly, its only fair to the host/owners to provide something to their benefit for providing the same, and likewise protect them from liability for accidents. If it was your private property, you would probably request the same.

April FoolsDay woulda been foolish to fly La Salina, but that soon changed as April 3 meant 2 hour flights for BajaBrent and Juan, and a 45 minute flight for Flipper.

Casey Cadwell, Dave Vida and Turbo Bob arrived April 3 to fly their trikes in the beautiful thermal conditions. Dave Vida, invited BajaBrent for a birthday flight to the tallest mountain in the region, a flat top northeast of Prima Tapia, a spot that BB had ALWAYS wanted to checkout. It looks like an EXCELLENT SPOT to launch in a South or Southwest day. Its about 2500 feet high, and the elongated SW facing ridge reminds one of Point of the Mountain in Utah.

BB and Dave took off @ 6:00PM in Dave’s new trike and proceeded north along the Pacific beaches. Turbo had predicted it to be a 25 mile trek north, however, BB and Dave doubted the estimate as Prima Tapia is only 10 miles north. Although they were ultimately correct, the flight met with strong headwinds and rotor as they approached the summit. Furthermore the summit was onslaught with a marine/cloud layer obscurring the access road that BB was looking to discover. Within a mile or two of the top their penetration stagnating the duo chose to abort the mission to return on another more favorable conditioned day. Alas, however, the flight was beautiful, as BB enjoyed riding around without the diligence required to navigate the flight., that was Dave’s job, and he did it well.

As we flew back to La Salina, Dave chose to take the long-approach and flew on south to Bajamar. It was truly awesome to float out over the ocean, golf course, and Ejido development. Truly a spectacular birthday gift, thanks to Dave.

BB captured a significant portion of the flight with his GoPro helmet cam, but unfortunately it ran outta battery 2o minutes into the flight. Hopefully he will be able to post it here soon. Here’s a teaser clip.

And later BajaBrent’s 3rd night of Birthday Partying at the B.4 included Grilled King Salmon (thanks to Terry Flint: aka Bullwinkle), grilled giant portabellas, grilled corn on the cob, salad of god and fresh strawberries….and of course plenty of Baja Vino, LA Cetto, Santo Thomas and Dona Lupe!

April 4: BajaBrent’s birthday started out very south. Turbo called Brent and pursuaded him to venture to Salsipuedes….sounded perfect. So Flipper, Turbo, Casey and BB loaded into Turbos truck and headed to one of the best flying sites—when its on—which is rare.

New Salsipuedes Launch!

And it once again, proved contrary. But we checked out some new launches located on the upper ridge in a new vinyard above Campo Saldamando.

The wind never improved, so we caught the free road back to Rancho Bonita, where we have launched before. Apparently the Federales recognized Turbos truck, so they blocked our departure. Typical Turbo flying day, w/ BB

The month continued for excellent flying as Flipper scored, one of her longest flights 1 hour 42 minutes, at a Sunday night glass-off. She even flew longer than Bajabrent, (who headed to the beach after coring a puffer–marked by HELEN the hawk–the last of the day).

1 hr 42 minutes of airtime: Flipper Deserves the Redtail Brew

Flip hung in there trying to score another, all by herself. And in the end got the LAST redtail hawk brewskie at the B-4! Way to go Flyin Flipper!!!

Team Fly La Salina, headed north to fly from Cantamar to Bajamar, a 10 mile XC route along the goldcoast. Juan Gonzalez, Steve Starwalt, Flyin Flipper and BajaBrent launched from a new road at a 1000 foot launch site.

After everyone else launched, BB led the way on the southerly excursion on an otherwise mediochre lift day as a high pressure system had set in. Juan soon followed and the two eventually crossed the Guadalupe River gap and headed back to La Salina and on down to the Bajamar Bump. Unable to garner enough lift to head further south, the two eventually returned north to cross to the beach and land at the La Salina Cantina. Great 90 minute flight!

April has also proven to be a BIG MONTH FOR ridge rehabilitation efforts, including grading of the road to launch, removal of the brush and giant boulders at North Launch; brush removal at South Launch and Super South launches, AND installation of two landing/launch areas behind north and south launches.

BACK are consistently good flying sessions of 2 hours or more. Bajabrent racked up 3 flights exceeding 3 hours in length. In one 5 consecutive segment, Bajabrent scored 5 flights of 10.5 hours gross airtime. Total BajaBrent airtime for the month 10 flights: 17.5 hours.

Juan(ita) Gonzalez and Flying Flipper also racked up some serious airtime as well.

Last but not least… the host, Bajabrent is also the most experienced La Salina paragliding pilot having recently celebrated his 14th “flying anniversary” , with over 900 hours of airtime at the site! His insight/advice are obviously, very helpful. In fact, site intro fees are usually assessed to non-booking pilot/tour groups. This is likewise included at no extra charge.
